Ever heard of a perpetual motion machine? If you haven't, then you might not want to ask a physicist unless you're prepared for a highly technical response. You might get the impression from some of them that physics (not money or even love) makes the world go round. That kind of discussion can go in many directions. But, for the purpose of this article, suffice it to say that the concept of perpetual motion is very attractive even though it involves the proposition of getting something from nothing. Therefore, a perpetual motion machine would be a specific application of this concept. The concept is hypothetical and, so far, its application has always fallen short...far short...making it no more than a concept! So, if you've read this far, you might be thinking...what the heck does a perpetual motion machine have to do with starting a real internet home business? The answer is that there is a huge number of internet business opportunities that, while attractive, are actually propositions for getting something for nothing.

Let's consider the sheer volume of internet business opportunities. By the way, here's an opportunity for you to do some basic research. Use your favorite internet search engine and look up some phrases (for example, try "free internet business", "easy internet business" and "get rich online"). At the time of this writing, and using a popular search engine, the first phrase yielded 36,500,000 results, while the second and third phrase yielded 11,900,000 and 3,540,000 results respectively (if you perform these searches, you may get different results because they vary by the search engine and the specific time of the search). Now, search on the following phrase: "real internet business". Did you get another huge result? At the time of this writing, and with the same search engine, the result was 27,500,000. The above results show that the sheer volume of opportunities can be intimidating and it might leave you feeling extremely discouraged as to whether you can make a profit. After all, with such fierce competition, can there really be that many real internet home businesses? That's a hard question to answer. The good news is that there is real opportunity. The challenge is having to sort through a ton of hype before you can find them.

Just finding real internet home business opportunities requires self-discipline, careful research and perseverance. The problem is that these qualities sound old-fashioned in today's fast-paced, sound-byte and visually-oriented world. They seem to be so old fashioned that some people behave as though information technology, like the internet, makes them unnecessary or, at most, insignificant. This is where the proposition and the temptation to get something for nothing comes in - and the temptation is strong. That might explain why there are millions of internet searches for phrases like "free internet business", "easy internet business" and "get rich online". But, eventually, some people discover - sometimes after substantial frustration and significant losses - that there is far more hype than there are real internet home business opportunities. At some point, they learn that the fundamentals of business - both large and small - really haven't changed that much over time. Somehow, they learn that real business is not just about profit. It's about fixed and variable cost, profit and loss, the on-going effort of reducing risk while increasing profit, providing the right products and services and achieving and sustaining high levels of customer satisfaction. The internet makes it easier to start and promote a business, but time-tested business fundamentals must be in place to ensure success.

Remember the search engine results (above) for the phrase "real internet business"? They were in the millions. That can make it real difficult to figure out what is really real! Some savvy internet surfers might say that the really real internet home business opportunities are shown on the first few pages of the search results. That may be a good place to start your investigation but it doesn't necessarily mean that each entry is really real. In some cases, it might mean that some website owners are just better at getting high search engine rankings than others. Bottom line is that you still have to do the hard work of evaluating the opportunities. Once you identify some viable options, you must do the work of picking the best one or the best set.

Finally, your short list of options must be compared to your specific needs. Resist the temptation to get rich quick and don't assume that the process will be easy, quick and inexpensive. We each have different needs for starting a real internet home business. For example, you might be a college student looking for a way to fund your education, which means you would pick opportunities that fit that situation in terms of required investment, risk and potential profit. On the other end of the spectrum might be a baby-boomer who is nearing retirement and realizes the need to earn additional income. That person's selection criteria might be completely different than that of the college student. But, no matter what your needs might be, don't fall for an internet marketer's proposition to get something for nothing. If you already have, then treat it as a lesson learned and commit to starting over - because there still are some real opportunities out there.

A Perspective on Starting an Internet Home Business

The Internet is one of the few things that changed everything. For example, not too long ago, public access to high speed communication consisted primarily of the radio, telephone and television. With the exception of the telephone, the communication is in one direction only. But, with the Internet, we can communicate interactively and to a far greater extent than with the telephone. Imagine that!

In just a few short years, the Internet has become a substantial forum for education, entertainment, communication and for conducting business. It facilitates the exchange of a wide variety of products and services. Some examples include books, movies, toys, power tools, music, furniture, appliances, medicine and a ton of information on just about any topic. The consumer is highly selective and the business owner is focused on learning how to form and sustain a mutually beneficial business relationship. Establishing that relationship isn't always easy, but it might not be as difficult as you might image. Why? Because if you have the desire to be successful and the commitment to learn and take the appropriate action, then you can be successful.

The successful business owner is one who: a) has the capacity to offer the right product or service, b) can enter a niche by giving the consumer something competitors have not thought of, heard of, or were unable to obtain, and c) is willing and able to work hard at making their internet home business presence known. The enterprising individual will find that the internet makes it possible to sell goods and services without having to maintain an inventory, employ a sales force, or even deal with shipping! In addition, there are some home business opportunities where the owner doesn't even have to worry about making or receiving telephone calls.

So, how do you get started? Well, starting an internet home business begins with the development of a business plan. That's very important. You know what they say about not planning, don't you? They say that those who don't develop a plan are actually planning to fail! The business plan outlines what will be sold to whom, and how the business will be advertised to reach the targeted consumer group. The plan also includes specific benchmarks for performance. This allows the entrepreneur to regularly monitor how well the business performs against established objectives. In this way, the plan is continuously improved to ensure the success of the business. This so-called paperwork must not be neglected. If it is, then the business will ultimately suffer. Worst case is that the entrepreneur may go out of business. So, like they say, you need to plan your work and work your plan!

The next step is to set up a website. Maybe you've heard it said that sooner or later one realizes that they need their own web site? It can be set up by the entrepreneur or out-sourced. Some might yield to the temptation to set up their own web site and that's ok if they know exactly what they are doing and how to do it. Otherwise, they should out-source it. Why? Because their web site is the visible presence of their business, just like a building would be. Imagine how few customers would visit a dysfunctional and run-down looking building! Your web site doesn't have to be the slickest thing out there, but it must be in good shape with respect to download speed, ease of use and the presentation of graphics and text. So, whether you set it up yourself or out-source it, make sure your web site is presentable for doing business.

The above addresses only two of the basic start-up steps. While they are certainly important, there are also other important steps required for the start-up, operation and sustained growth of an internet home business.

The theme of the article is, in my opinion, applicable to home business in general, but he focuses on the internet category. Please read it and see what you think. In regard to making money on the Internet, everyone is always looking for the quick fix. They want to sign up for a program, place an advertisement, and make hundreds or thousands of dollars instantly. While this may be possible depending on your circumstances, the most direct and guaranteed path to success on the Internet is to stick with the fundamentals.

A friend of mine who is an athletic coach for kids in the city where I live reminded me of this lesson. This guy is actually so passionate about kids and athletics that he coaches 4 different sports: basketball, soccer, baseball and football. Of course, he has a kid of his own on each team. But what is remarkable about this guy is the results he gets with his teams.

He was recruited to coach the 8th grade football team where his children go to school. After 27 years of losing seasons in a row, the first year my friend became the head coach the team won the district championship and repeated their championship run the following year. This past weekend he coached 12 different games and won all 12 of them. As you can tell, this guy is extremely dedicated.

But the funny thing is that he and the kids he coaches are not totally hung up on winning. If they lose a game, they feel equally good about themselves as they would if they had won. What matters most to them is how well they played and lived up to their potential as a team.

The real question is how my friend's teams continually perform on such a high level and beat nearly anyone they play even though they are often smaller and younger than their competitors. I asked this question to my friend the other day and he told me that it's all in the fundamentals.

In his practices, all he works on with his kids is keeping a positive mindset and practicing the fundamentals. He told me that his teams never scrimmage or strategize about upcoming games during practice. They simply work hard on all the fundamentals of whatever particular sport they are playing and do so more than any other team they play. This constant practice and improvement of the fundamentals is what allows his teams to progress faster than his competitors. While most other teams get caught up with how to win, out-strategize, be stronger than and intimidate their opponents, my friend's team is just so good at the basics that they blow everyone out of the water when game day arrives.

This got me thinking about my own Internet business and why I've been able to succeed on such a high level while most others who have tried to do what I do have failed. The answer is not really surprising.

Most people who try to build a successful Internet home business are looking for the quick fix. They want it to work IMMEDIATELY and so they usually fall prey to business opportunities that promise to help them get rich overnight and advertising scams that promise to deliver thousands of hungry prospects to their website in the next 24 hours. Of course, these opportunistic schemes are really just geared to steal people's hard earned money. You see, when someone is desperate and looking for an INSTANT solution, they will often be taken advantage of and their chances for success with an Internet home business are slim to none.

However, while there are thousands of business opportunities on the Internet and millions of different ways to advertise and promote your website, I personally practice the fundamentals in my Internet home business. I do this by sticking with the business opportunities I've joined for the long haul and promoting my website consistently with simple, affordable and easily maintained Internet marketing techniques.

In fact, one of the techniques that works best for me is writing articles like this one and getting them published on other people's websites using article syndication tools and software found online.

By writing articles and getting them published on other websites online using powerful tools like those mentioned above, I'm able to get my name and website address in front of thousands of people without paying a dime in advertising. Of course, the key to this strategy is that I write and distribute articles consistently in this way. It's one of those "fundamentals" that doesn't cost anything but a little time and effort. Fact is, it's this price of time and effort that most people are unwilling to pay. They'll gladly part with hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but ask them to do a little hard work and they say "No way."

It's this understanding that can separate you from the pack. If you are willing to practice the fundamentals of your business faithfully and consistently, you will be destined to succeed on a high level. But if you can't and you're only looking for the quick fix, you have already lost the game before you even set foot on the field.

Even pros like me practice the fundamentals every day. In fact, especially pros like me practice the fundamentals. The moment I stop practicing the fundamentals is the moment I stop being a pro. Think about this carefully and then renew YOUR commitment to the fundamentals of your Internet home business today. Do this and you will soar past your competition.


Well, what do you think? I think you'll agree that Stone's emphasis on continually practicing the fundementals is definitely key to the success of a long-term profit home internet business - just like it is for any business for that matter! He also ephasized that he considers article marketing as fundemental to his success - and he certainly is successful!

Now, I have a question for you. The question is: Who decides what's fundamental to the success of a home internet business? What do you think? I think you will agree that the nature of the business itself dictates some of the fundamentals. But the rest, in my opinion, is determined by the owner of the business. For example, article marketing is fundamental to Stone's success, but some other successful entrepreneurs might say that pay-per-click advertising is fundamental to their success. So, my point is that what is considered as "fundamental to success" will vary by entrepreneur.

As for me, I consider article marketing as fundamental to my success too - and I'm defintely not in the same class as Stone (at least not yet)! I also consider search engine optimization as fundamental to my success.
